Leny Yoro has promised to come back stronger after undergoing surgery for a foot injury that disrupted his summer transfer to Manchester United.
The French centre-back, signed for £58.9m from Lille, sustained an injury during a pre-season game against Arsenal. He was later diagnosed with a fractured metatarsal, sidelining him for three months.
United confirmed Yoro’s surgery earlier this week, and the 18-year-old expressed his gratitude to fans for their support.
“This isn’t the start I wanted, but that’s football,” Yoro wrote. “The operation went well. Thank you for your many messages of support. Now, it’s time for patience and rehabilitation work. See you soon, stronger.”
United had initially planned to sign two centre-backs this summer, but they tried to keep the severity of Yoro’s injury under wraps to avoid affecting their transfer market strategy.
One of United’s key targets is Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt. However, the club fears they might have to pay a premium since Bayern is aware of Yoro’s three-month absence.
Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite is also on United’s radar, but his £70m price tag is considered too high.
Currently, the focus is on de Ligt, and United recently failed with a double bid that included right-back Noussair Mazraoui. Negotiations are ongoing, with both players interested in the move.
