Kylian Mbappe won’t need surgery to fix the broken nose he sustained during France’s 1-0 victory over Austria at Euro 2024. Instead, he’ll continue playing in the tournament while wearing a protective mask.
Maximilian Wober’s own goal in the first half kept the two teams apart in Dusseldorf, but many spectators will remember Mbappe’s ugly clash with Austria’s Kevin Danso toward the end of the match.
In Austria’s penalty area, the 25-year-old leaped to win a header, but in the process, he clashed with Danso’s shoulder as he leaned in to intercept the ball. Because of this, Mbappe was covered in blood, and before he could be brought off down the tunnel, France’s physiotherapists had to treat him extensively.
Following the game, the French Football Federation released a statement that said, “Kylian Mbappe returns to the base camp of the French national team.” “During the second leg of the Austria-France match, which took place in Dusseldorf on Monday, he broke his nose.”
“The medical crew and Dr. Franck Le Gall treated the French captain first, determining that he had a fractured nose.
“Mbappe will not have surgery anytime soon, but he will receive treatment in the next days. In order for the French national team’s number 10 to get ready for his comeback to competition following a time spent receiving treatment, a mask will be fashioned for him.
After the game, France manager Didier Deschamps expressed concern regarding Mbappe, adding in his post-match press conference: “He’s not doing well. He’s on the medical staff, and I had a lot of media questions before coming here, so I can’t say anything else.
“But his nose was seriously injured, for sure. We need to look into that, but it appears to be extremely complicated, which is really sad for us tonight.”
Mbappe, whose summer transfer to Real Madrid has now been announced, appeared to be in high spirits despite the incident, tweeting on social media “any ideas for masks?” and will hope to play a key role in France’s campaign as they seek to become European champions for the third time in their history.
France’s second Euro 2024 encounter comes against the always dangerous Netherlands on Friday afternoon, followed by a clash with Poland on Tuesday. They are second in Group D after defeating Austria, with Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst scoring to propel Ronald Koeman’s Oranje to the top of the goalscoring charts.
