Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has acknowledged the difficulties of fostering team cohesion due to the high turnover of players at Stamford Bridge.
The West London club experienced another hectic transfer window, bringing in 13 new players to an already crowded squad, along with appointing new head coach Enzo Maresca. This influx of talent led to the formation of a “bomb squad,” featuring the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling, and Trevoh Chalobah.
While most of these players found new clubs by the transfer deadline, Chilwell remained, leaving many with the impression that Chelsea still lacks a clear long-term strategy.
Cucurella, who was a key part of Spain’s European Championship-winning squad this summer, believes that a period of stability under Maresca is crucial for the club’s future success.
Speaking to Spanish news agency EFE, the defender shared his optimism: “I’m happy, the coach we have is very good and has clear ideas. We’ve gone through years of coaching changes, but now we need stability and for the manager to pass on his vision.”
Stability is Key
Cucurella stressed that Chelsea must find patience and allow time for the team to grow. “We have high-level players, and we just need calm and stability so that things can go well. If we can maintain that, the coaches and players will have the time to build something significant.”
Team Spirit Hard to Build Amid Constant Change
Regarding team unity, Cucurella admitted it’s been tough to build a strong bond with so many new arrivals at the club.
“It’s difficult,” Cucurella admitted. “With Spain, it’s much easier to create a positive atmosphere. At Chelsea, I try, but there’s so much change—players leaving, others coming in. One of the keys to our success at the Euros was the great group dynamic we had. In tournaments like that, you’re together constantly, and if you don’t get along, it’s hard to succeed. Building a good team spirit comes naturally to me.”
