Tottenham Hotspur will be without vice-captain Cristian Romero for their Europa League group-stage match against Qarabag on September 27th, due to a suspension from Spurs’ 2022 Champions League campaign.
As reported by Alasdair Gold of Football London, Romero was sent off during Tottenham’s round of 16 tie against AC Milan two seasons ago after receiving two yellow cards. His first booking came in the 17th minute, followed by a second in the 77th, resulting in his dismissal. Although Spurs missed out on European competition last season, UEFA regulations state that such suspensions carry over to future tournaments, meaning Romero will serve his ban in the upcoming fixture.
The Impact of Romero’s Absence
Romero has been a pivotal figure in Tottenham’s defense under new manager Ange Postecoglou, making his absence a notable blow. However, the timing could benefit the team, as Spurs face Manchester United in the Premier League just two days after the Qarabag match. This enforced rest may help keep Romero fresh for the critical encounter at Old Trafford.
Radu Dragusin Expected to Step In
Romanian defender Radu Dragusin is likely to fill Romero’s spot. Dragusin impressed in Tottenham’s recent Premier League clash against Newcastle, stepping in for the injured Micky van de Ven. His solid performance demonstrated his reliability as a backup, boosting Postecoglou’s confidence in the team’s ability to cope without Romero.
While the suspension is a setback, Spurs will rely on their squad depth, with Dragusin expected to lead the defense against Qarabag as they aim to maintain their strong start in the Europa League. Meanwhile, Postecoglou will hope his key players are well-rested for upcoming Premier League battles.
