Chelsea are reportedly close to finalizing a deal to sign Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.
The Blues have been searching for a ball-playing goalkeeper to fit Enzo Maresca’s new system, with some doubts about Djordje Petrovic’s suitability for the role.
Robert Sanchez has been reinstated as Chelsea’s first-choice keeper, but Jorgensen has emerged as a key target for Maresca. Negotiations between Chelsea and Villarreal are moving forward smoothly, with the two clubs discussing a transfer fee between £17m and £21m for the 22-year-old, who impressed as one of La Liga’s top ball-playing goalkeepers last season.
This fee is unlikely to deter Chelsea, who are currently ahead of Marseille in the race for Jorgensen.
While discussions about a new goalkeeper continue, Sanchez started Chelsea’s first pre-season friendly. After the 2-2 draw with Wrexham, Maresca didn’t rule out the possibility of bringing in a new player.
“Robert did very well tonight and has been excellent since we started,” Maresca said. “The goalkeeper is crucial for the way we want to play. While I’m pleased with Robert, we’ll have to see what happens. We currently have four goalkeepers, and Petrovic is still with us, though he’s injured. The transfer window is open, so things can change quickly.”
Petrovic is expected to be available for transfer this summer, but it’s unclear whether Chelsea will seek a permanent transfer or a loan deal.
